Oyi-tsa is identified in the record as a Pueblo chief, and this portrait dates to about 1905. Edward S. Curtis made it for *The North American Indian*, his multivolume effort to document Native American life, and it appeared as plate 601 in a supplementary volume published between 1907 and 1930. Curtis typically posed his sitters in traditional dress against plain backdrops, and his portraits were reproduced as photogravures for subscribers. Today such pictures are read both as records of individuals and as products of a project that shaped how Indigenous people were presented to the public.
