Few pictures on this board turn a national anthem so pointedly against its own country as this 1918 lithograph, which borrows the opening words of "Deutschland über alles" and follows them with the question "Que veut l'Allemagne?" ("What does Germany want?"). Victor Prouvé, a painter and sculptor from Nancy who was closely tied to the École de Nancy, signed the design in 1918, the last year of the war. French posters of this period aimed to rally public support and to cast Germany as an aggressive power, and this sheet is catalogued in a printed checklist, which suggests it was produced and circulated in some number.
