Few wartime posters speak so directly to the smoker at home. This 1918 color lithograph, signed by Andrée Ménard, asks civilian smokers to go without so that French soldiers at the front do not run short. Its subjects also include helmets, linking a private habit to the men in the trenches. Tobacco was a prized ration for troops, and by the last year of the war, shortages strained supplies on both the home front and the battlefield. The poster shows how governments recast personal consumption as a patriotic duty.
