Dated August 21, 1923, this glass negative records Andrew W. Mellon, the Pittsburgh banker who served as Secretary of the Treasury from 1921 to 1932 under Presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. His tax cuts and fiscal policies shaped the decade's economy. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio known for its portraits of officials and scenes of city life, made the negative, which came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947. Streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect the gradual deterioration of its original coating.
