The March 1790 issue of *The Massachusetts Magazine* opened with this engraving of the courthouse in Salem, a view drawn by W. Gray and engraved by S. Hill. The open plaza around the building shows the civic space that surrounded such structures in the period. Salem was then a prosperous Atlantic port, and the magazine, published in Boston by Isaiah Thomas and Ebenezer T. Andrews, offered its readers images of familiar towns alongside its essays and miscellany.
