Frankfort, the Kentucky state capital, is the setting for this 1882 design for a combined federal courthouse and post office, and the image is a photolithograph of an architectural drawing by R. H. Atkinson. The drawing was reproduced in an official report, which suggests the design was circulated to document federal building work under the Treasury Department's Office of the Supervising Architect, then headed by James G. Hill. Buildings that housed a federal court and a post office under one roof were a common model for federal construction in that period, so this print shows both a specific Kentucky project and a wider government building program.
