This drawing focuses on the chair used by the presiding officer of the United States Senate, rather than on the building as a whole. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, then architect of the Capitol, dated it October 20, 1809, and combined elevations, plans and close details in watercolor, ink and graphite. The Senate chamber was in the north wing, which Latrobe was fitting out during these years, and his care with small furnishings shows his wider aim of making the building's interiors match its architecture. The sheet is part of his papers at the Library of Congress and offers a close look at early federal design in the young capital.
