The Polo Grounds, a sporting ground on the upper west side of Manhattan, was named for the polo matches played there in the 1880s before baseball became its main attraction. This print was entered for copyright in April 1887, a period when the site was a popular gathering place for crowds at both sports. The catalog card associates the print with the New York Lithographing, Engraving & Printing Company, though that attribution is unverified. Its value lies in showing how the grounds looked as the city's sporting life grew toward the era of the modern ballpark.
