On November 25, 1783, the last British troops left Manhattan, ending seven years of occupation after the Revolutionary War, and this wood engraving marks that day. Issued from a Chambers Street office in 1883, it was made a century later as a commemorative piece, which is why its scene reads as a retrospective view rather than an eyewitness record. The subjects listed in its record stress the departing British and the American flags, the two sides of a moment that became known as Evacuation Day. Its hand coloring was common in illustrated war histories of the period, and it shows how Americans in the 1880s chose to remember the city's return to Patriot control.
