A Stranger in New York" stands out for its promotional wording: a note on the sheet says it was circulated to draw visitors to the city. The color lithograph, issued by the Strobridge Company and credited to proprietors Hoyt & McKee, dates to about 1897, when theatrical advertising relied heavily on bold color and eye-catching display. Strobridge, a Cincinnati firm, printed large numbers of stage posters for touring and city productions in that period. The catalog record is based on an older caption card and is not fully verified, but it still shows how theater managers pitched New York as a place for out-of-town audiences to see.
