Rock Creek Park, the wooded valley that runs through the northwest of Washington, D.C., is the setting for this glass negative, which makes it one of the few images in this group that places a motorcar on the park's roads rather than in the city streets. The picture comes from the Harris & Ewing studio, a Washington portrait and news photography firm that worked in the capital from the early twentieth century through the 1940s. The park was set aside in 1890 and was becoming a popular destination for drives and outings as automobiles spread among city residents in the years before and after World War I, so the scene records a shift in how Washingtonians spent their leisure time.
