Taken on November 9, 1929, this glass negative shows President Herbert Hoover at a Navy versus Georgetown football game, a sporting outing only about eight months into his term. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials, public occasions and city life in the early twentieth century, made the exposure, and Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947. The streaks and blemishes across the surface come from natural deterioration of the original coatings on glass plates of this age, not from the scene itself.
