The title on this 1924 Cleveland negative, simply "Clark," comes from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the plate or its sleeve and has not been independently confirmed, so the subject could be a street, a building or a person. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm active in the early twentieth century, made large numbers of city views on glass plates like this one for commercial and civic clients. Glass negatives of this kind often show streaks and blemishes as their coatings deteriorate, and those marks are worth noting when judging the image's condition. The plate reached the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
