The title Shaule, Cleveland names a place and year, though the record marks the name as unverified because it comes from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve. The company, based in Washington, D.C., made large numbers of commercial views of American cities in the early twentieth century, and this 4 by 5 inch glass plate reflects that practice. Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and other blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of its original coatings, so some marks show the plate's age as much as the scene.
