The negative is labeled "Edwards" in Cleveland, but the record marks that title as unverified data supplied by the National Photo Company, so the exact subject remains uncertain. The plate dates to 1924, when Cleveland was a major manufacturing center on Lake Erie. The National Photo Company, a Washington-based commercial firm, documented American cities and towns in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives later came to the Library of Congress through a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. The faint streaks and blemishes visible on the plate come from gradual deterioration of its original coatings.
