Saved" presents a rescue at sea, a theme Winslow Homer returned to repeatedly during the 1880s, when his work turned often to the dangers faced by fishermen and sailors on the Atlantic coast. The subject reflects the period's concern with shipwreck, and the United States Life-Saving Service, founded in 1871, staffed stations along the nation's shores to reach stranded crews. G.W.H. Ritchie produced the etching after Homer's design, and it was copyrighted by C. Klackner of New York. Its reprinting in a 1997 survey of American visual history shows how Homer's maritime scenes came to stand for courage and public service.
