Unlike the group scenes elsewhere on this board, Hollar's plate isolates a single man, identified in the inscription as an American from Virginia and given an age of 23. The lettering states that Hollar drew the figure from life and etched it himself. Bohemian-born Wenceslaus Hollar worked in England and the Low Countries and produced several studies of this kind, and this one is dated Antwerp, 1645. The jewelry noted in the record makes it a useful, if European-filtered, glimpse of the personal adornment worn by Algonquian people of the Virginia region in the early seventeenth century.
