Chief Severo, a Ute leader, sits with his family in this portrait, which the record spells "Sevara" in its title. It is a photochrom, a color print the Detroit Photographic Company made from a photograph by Nast of Denver, and the process was prized in the 1890s for its soft, painted look. The record dates the reproduction to about 1899 and the original possibly to 1885, so the clothing shown reflects Ute dress of the late nineteenth century. Studio portraits like this one circulated widely among viewers curious about Western peoples, so the garments and beadwork are worth a close look.
