A framed miniature portrait of a woman, dated 1840, is the subject here, and the record gives no name for the sitter or the maker. The image itself is a black-and-white photograph of an earlier object, so what we see is a copy of a small painted or photographed likeness rather than the original. Around 1840 was the very beginning of photography: daguerreotypes had just been announced in 1839 and were quickly adopted for portraits, often housed in small cases much like the frame shown here. Early sitters typically had to hold still for long exposures, and the result was a unique, mirror-like image on silvered copper, so such early portraits are prized today as some of the first attempts to capture a face on a permanent surface.
