A profile head-and-shoulders portrait from 1844 places its sitter squarely in the first years of photography's public life, when the daguerreotype was barely five years old. Early portraits like this one were made on a polished silver-coated copper plate, which gave an image of remarkable sharpness but no negative, so every picture was a unique object. Sitters of the period often had to hold still for minutes in bright light, and the side view was a deliberate choice that echoed the profile medallions and coins of earlier generations. The record does not name the man, so the picture is best read as a window onto how early photographers borrowed the conventions of classical portrait art.
