A profile portrait is an unusual choice for an early daguerreotype, since the sitter had to hold still for several minutes in strong light and most studio portraits of 1844 faced the camera squarely. Here the man is turned sideways, his head and shoulders caught in the silvered copper plate's sharp, mirror-like detail. Daguerreotypes of this period were one-of-a-kind images, so this plate exists as a single object rather than a print that could be copied. Look closely at the fine gradations of tone in the face and collar, which show how much detail the process could hold.
