Few sitters from the 1840s left a record as specific as this one, though the surviving details are modest: a head-and-shoulders study of an unnamed man, made in 1844. Daguerreotypes like this were produced on a silvered copper plate, which gave a mirror-bright surface that had to be tilted to catch the light and seen at the right angle to reveal the image. Exposures in that period often ran several minutes, so sitters were typically asked to hold still with the help of head braces. The format was then newly popular, and portraits of this kind mark the earliest years when ordinary people could afford a lasting likeness of themselves.
