Shown nearly in profile and leaning against a pillow, Andrew Jackson appears here in a pose that suggests the declining health he faced in his last years. Jackson had retired to his Hermitage plantation near Nashville after two terms as the seventh president, and by 1844 or 1845 he was a frail elder statesman. This plate is a copy, possibly made from an original by Edward Anthony, and the pencil and scratched inscriptions on it name the sitter. The warm brown cast comes from gold toning, a finishing step widely used on daguerreotypes of the period.
