This bird's eye view shows all of Philadelphia from a high, angled vantage, as if seen from above the rooftops, and its 1876 date ties it to the Centennial year. That summer the city hosted the Centennial Exposition in Fairmount Park, marking 100 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia, and the fair drew visitors from across the country. Panoramic city views like this were popular in the 1870s and 1880s because they let viewers pick out streets, churches, and public buildings in one sweep. The map is worth studying for the way it captures a rapidly growing city at a moment of national pride.
