This 1902 bird's-eye view shows Pittsburgh from an imagined elevated vantage point, where the three rivers meet to form the Ohio. Panoramic maps like this one, drawn by artists such as T. M. Fowler and James B. Moyer, were popular in the decades before aerial photography, and they let viewers take in a whole city's streets, rail lines, and riverfront at once. In 1902, Pittsburgh was at the height of its steel and manufacturing boom, so the dense industrial districts along the rivers are worth studying for a sense of how the city worked at the turn of the century.
