This view takes in Philadelphia and its surrounding countryside from an elevated, angled perspective, a format that railroads used to advertise the places their lines reached. The Philadelphia & Reading Railroad, which ran heavily used lines through the region and into the anthracite coal country, commissioned such pictorial maps to promote travel and freight service. Looking at it today, the grid of streets between the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers and the routes of the rail lines reveal how central rail transportation was to the city's growth in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
