Baalbek, in what is now Lebanon, is the subject here, and David Roberts drew its great temple ruins on his 1839 journey through the region. The lithograph appeared in the second volume of The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia, published in parts between 1842 and 1845 with prints made by Louis Haghe from Roberts's on-the-spot sketches. Roberts's careful draftsmanship and Haghe's color work made these plates among the most admired views of the Near East in the nineteenth century, and the set helped shape European images of the region for decades.
