Point of Rocks, where the Appomattox River runs near Petersburg, was the site of a pontoon bridge and of Benjamin F. Butler's headquarters in the summer of 1864. Butler's Union forces were then pressing against Petersburg, and the crossing carried wagons and soldiers between the army's base and the siege lines. The drawing, in pencil and Chinese white on olive paper, also shows the vessels Greyhound, Butler's flagship, and Sylvan Shore, which were part of the river traffic that supplied his command. Sketches like this one give a sense of how the Union army organized its movements on land and water during the siege.
