Carved into the stone of the U.S. Capitol, this pediment sculpture is the subject of an albumen print that the record dates to about 1862, though the exact year is uncertain. The building was still unfinished during the Civil War, with its dome and additions under construction, so the carving stood as a symbol of the national government while the Union was fighting to hold itself together. The print is attributed to Andrew J. Russell, whose wartime photographs of the period are widely studied. Albumen prints of this era captured fine detail in stone, which makes the sculpture's figures and architectural lines especially clear.
