Here the setting is Union Station in Washington, D.C., with a crowd of spectators and automobiles gathered around the former president, Theodore Roosevelt, who died in January 1919. The negative is a glass plate from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented the city's streets, buildings and public life in the early twentieth century. Because the catalog dates it only to the period between 1918 and 1919, the exact occasion is uncertain. The plate also shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging glass negatives, which give the scene a textured, slightly faded quality.
