Here Roosevelt is shown at the laying of the cornerstone for the Pan American Union Building, a headquarters meant for the joint office of the American republics in Washington. He laid the stone in 1908, a time when his administration was seeking closer ties with Latin American nations, and Andrew Carnegie had helped fund the building. Designed by Albert Kelsey and Paul Cret, the structure still stands on Constitution Avenue, a few blocks from the White House.
