Titled *The King of the House*, this hand-colored lithograph makes a young child the ruler of the family, a playful reversal that gives the picture its humor. It was published in New York around 1875 by Currier & Ives, a firm that did more than most to make inexpensive pictorial prints a common feature of American homes. Its appeal rested on sentimental scenes of domestic life and childhood, priced low enough for ordinary middle-class households. The hand coloring, often done by workers in assembly-line fashion, is part of what made each sheet look like a small painting.
