Five small sketches share one sheet of brown paper, moving from a portrait to two sailing vessels, the exterior of a house, and a landscape of trees. The mount bears the signature "T. Birch," which most likely refers to Thomas Birch (1779–1851), the English-born painter who worked in Philadelphia and became known for marine pictures. Rendered in pencil, ink and watercolor between about 1810 and 1840, the group suggests how an artist of the period might switch between people, buildings and water within a single working session. The sheet is part of the Marian S. Carson Collection at the Library of Congress.
