George H. Primrose and Lew Dockstader, two prominent minstrel performers of the late 1800s, share top billing on this tall 1898 color lithograph. The Strobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati and New York printed it, and the photograph it was based on came from the Falk studio in New York. Minstrel shows relied on blackface makeup and caricatures of Black Americans, and posters like this one promoted those performers to large audiences. Viewers today should read the image with that history in mind.
