A small log cabin in the open meadows of Yosemite Valley is the particular subject here, one of the early homesteads that settlers built after word of the valley's cliffs and waterfalls reached the East in the 1850s. The New York firm Currier & Ives issued the scene as a hand-colored lithograph for a public eager for images of the far West. Its interest lies in timing: Lincoln's 1864 grant set the valley aside for public use, and tourism soon followed, so the print captures the valley as it was changing from frontier to destination.
