A torn caption leaves the subject only partly legible, but the surviving title, "Geo. B. Bell," and the date, September 6, 1921, place this exposure in early autumn of that year. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio based in Washington, D.C., produced large numbers of glass negatives of city streets, public figures, and events during the 1910s and 1920s, and this plate belongs to that body of work. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual deterioration of the original coating, a common condition in glass negatives of this age. The Library of Congress received the plate as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French.
