Blue ground, a woman's head and hands, and a sponsor line naming the Federal theater Project set this silkscreen poster apart from the other Work Projects Administration designs here. Printed in 1936, it belongs to the wave of posters the WPA's arts programs produced to advertise theater, music and art events, many of them free or low-cost. Silkscreen let designers use flat, bold areas of color that could be printed cheaply in large runs. The back of the board carries a May 14, 1941 date stamp and a New York State WPA Art Program stamp, which shows the poster was still moving through state offices years after it was made.
