A red field frames the head and hands of a woman raised in the center of this design, a bold, close-cropped composition typical of the silkscreen posters the WPA produced. The Federal theater Project sponsored the work, and that project, part of the Works Progress Administration, employed theater workers during the Depression and staged productions across the country, with New York City among its most active centers. Posters like this one advertised shows and public events, using flat color and simplified forms to catch the eye on crowded city streets. The stamps on the back show the sheet later passed through the New York State WPA Art Program.
