A neighborhood fingerprint station, set up as a civil defense service, is the subject of this 1941 silkscreen poster, which presents fingerprinting as a practical step for residents. Its slogan, "Fingerprints are your identification and protection," reflects a wartime concern: if bombing or disaster left people unrecognizable, prints offered a reliable way to identify victims and reunite families. The poster was produced under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, and like many of its public-service posters, it uses bold flat color and simple shapes to reach ordinary Americans quickly.
