Theodore Dreiser, the novelist behind *Sister Carrie* and *An American Tragedy*, sat for this portrait on November 8, 1933, in the studio of Carl Van Vechten, the writer and photographer who spent decades making portraits of the artists, performers and writers of the period. Dreiser was then one of the most controversial figures in American letters, known for naturalistic fiction that examined money, ambition and moral failure in unsparing detail. The gelatin silver print is part of Van Vechten's large celebrity series, now held by the Library of Congress, and it captures a writer at mid-career, when his reputation was firmly established.
