A drypoint portrait of the American painter Theodore Robinson, made by his friend and fellow artist J. Alden Weir, this print is a rare case of one painter recording another in a printmaking medium. Robinson (1852-1896) spent much of his career in France, where he worked around Giverny and absorbed the lessons of Impressionism before returning to the United States. In drypoint, the artist scratches lines directly into a copper plate with a needle, which produces soft, velvety burrs that give the image its characteristic warmth. The sheet is signed in pencil by Weir.
