The embossed emblem on this red card marks the Northern Pacific Yellowstone Park Line, the railroad branch that carried travelers from Livingston, Montana, toward the park's northern entrance at Gardiner. Raised lettering and a stamped design were a common way to make travel literature feel substantial and collectible. Railroads at the time competed for tourists, and the Northern Pacific, which had a stake in promoting Yellowstone as the country's first national park, used such brochures to draw visitors to its trains and hotels. The raised emblem on a bold red ground was meant to catch the eye on a crowded rack, and it still shows how the railroad presented the park as a destination in its own right.
