Cherry blossom season in Tokyo, when the sakura bloom in late March and early April, drew crowds into parks and streets for hanami, or flower viewing, and this glass negative records one of the processions that marked it. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain, supplied news photographs to newspapers, and its collection at the Library of Congress preserves a large body of early twentieth-century press pictures. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards that were not independently verified, so the exact year and occasion remain uncertain. Glass plates like this one were widely used for press photography before flexible film became common.
