Wrigley Field on Chicago's North Side was in its fifteenth season as a ballpark in 1929, and the Cubs had played there since 1916 under the name Weeghman Park. William Wrigley Jr., the chewing gum manufacturer who had bought a controlling interest in the club, renamed the grounds Cubs Park in 1920 and then Wrigley Field in 1927, so by 1929 the stadium carried his family's name. The neighborhood around it was a mix of working-class and middle-class homes, and the games drew crowds by streetcar and elevated train from across the city. Chicagoans in 1929 knew the park as a summer gathering place for baseball, even as the wider city's industry, meatpacking and rail traffic kept its economy running at full speed until the stock market crash that October.
