A small graphite sketch on cream paper, this drawing records a forge in Ajaccio, the port town on Corsica, and it served as preparation for an etching of the same title, though the composition is reversed in the final plate. Whistler signed it with his butterfly monogram, and the sheet belongs to the Joseph and Elizabeth Robins Pennell Collection of Whistleriana at the Library of Congress. The Corsican etchings gave him trouble with the ground, the waxy coating a plate is drawn through, and they were not printed until after his death in 1903.
