Waupun, a town in Dodge County in east central Wisconsin, was in 1885 a farm trading center with a state prison at its core. The Wisconsin State Prison had been located there since the early 1850s, and its cell blocks and workshops gave the town a presence well beyond its size. Farmers from the surrounding countryside brought grain, livestock and dairy goods to town, and rail connections carried much of that produce on to larger markets. Residents of the period knew Waupun as much for the prison as for its fields, and its streets and business blocks reflected a community that relied on both farm trade and the institution's payroll.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Waupun, Wisconsin, drawn in 1885. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
