Wauwatose, Wisconsin, in 1892 was a village on the western edge of Milwaukee, and it was changing from farmland into a place where city workers could live. Streetcar lines running out from Milwaukee made commuting practical, so families built homes along the main roads while market gardens and orchards still covered much of the open ground. The county's public institutions, including the Milwaukee County asylum, drew attention and jobs to the area. Local people knew Wauwatose as a quiet, leafy neighbor to the big brewing and manufacturing city beside it, and it was still deciding how much of its character as a farm town it would keep. Within a few years, the village would become a city, a step that reflected how fast its population was growing.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Wauwatose, Wisconsin, drawn in 1892. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
