Watertown, Wisconsin, in 1885 was a Rock River town in Jefferson County whose fortunes still rested on the river's water power and on the surrounding farms. Through the 1880s, Wisconsin's agriculture was shifting toward dairying, and towns like Watertown served as trading points where farm produce moved out by wagon and rail. The town's population still included many families of German descent, whose churches, schools, and societies gave everyday life much of its character. Residents of the period would have known Watertown as a practical, growing market town, with mills along the river and a downtown that depended on the farm trade around it.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Watertown, Wisconsin, drawn in 1885. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
