In 1885 Oconomowoc, a town in Waukesha County about thirty miles west of Milwaukee, was known as a lake resort. Visitors from Chicago and Milwaukee came by rail each summer to stay in hotels and boarding houses along its lakes, so the local economy relied on seasonal trade as well as the surrounding farms. Waukesha County's fields produced grain, dairy, and livestock for city markets, and the same rail lines that carried summer guests also hauled those goods out. Residents knew the town as a place whose streets filled in June and emptied after the autumn departures. The close drawing of churches, stores, and lakeside grounds records a community whose population rose and fell with the seasons.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Oconomowoc Waukesha, Wisconsin, drawn in 1885. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
