Medford, the county seat of Taylor County in north central Wisconsin, was a young lumber town in 1885, its fortunes tied to the pine forests that drew sawmill and logging crews into the region through the decade. Taylor County had been organized only about ten years earlier, and Medford's courthouse business, land dealings, and merchants' stores clustered along its main streets. Railroad lines pushing north across the state carried timber out and new settlers in, so a town like this measured its growth by the frame houses, churches, and schools going up on lots that had been cleared only a few years before. Residents would have known Medford as a northern woods community where a family could find work, land, and a county government close at hand.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Medford, Wisconsin, drawn in 1885. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
